Mongolia: Thomo Gets Burgled .... Bloody Twice

Places Visited
Last Friday (6 May 2005) I moved house. I moved out of the Puma Hotel here in Ulaanbaatar and into an apartment. Apartment is good, new, has 24x7 security and is in a building popular with expats because of its security. Because of functions on Friday afternoon and night, I grabbed my bags in the afternoon, and my laptop, and moved them into the apartment. Left them overnight (came back and slept) and unpacked everything in the morning. The office mobile phone, which I was not using because mine is better, was left here along with battery chargers for both phones, phone pouch for my good phone and the rest of my cables and such. I went into the office with the good phone and the laptop. That was about 11:00 am (I had gone to the office and had to come back as I had left my glasses here). It was sometime after that when things started to happen.

Saturday afternoon and most of Sunday I was about with a mate here. Monday morning I got up for work and could not find the mobile phone. Hmm, thinks Thomo, I must have left it in the office with the move and everything. Went to the office and could not find it. Checked thoroughly through the apartment, could not find it. Could not find the charger for either that phone or my phone or indeed the belt pouch for my phone.

Initially I thought I had left it at the hotel. Checked there and they had not found anything left in my room except for two cans of beer (which the cleaning lady drank my health with). We assumed it had then been stolen from the office and that I must have left it on my desk.

So, I got back to my apartment tonight, Thursday,12 May 2005. Walked over to where I usually put my keys and noticed that two big books were missing along with a stack of DVDs that I had purchased in Bangkok on the way up to Mongolia. Further examination showed that 5 books had been stolen (and four of these are military history type books), 15 DVDs, 50 blank CDs and all my Frequent Flyer Cards (idiot thief left an unsigned American Express card though).

To top it all off, the bastard also ate my M&Ms from the kitchen cupboard.

I called Baggy, my long suffering translator and the Agent for the apartment. The agent called the owner and Baggy called the police. A statement was taken (which I duly signed - no idea what it really said). The owner admitted to having lost a key the day I moved in - maybe one of the contractors working here with her that day took it - who knows. I just know that I have lost about US $500 or $600 worth of stuff this week and have been burgled twice in seven days.

The owner changed the lock tonight and has given me all six keys. Do I feel safe in my current home? Nope. Am I pissed? Yep! One of those books I have had for nearly 20 years and it is a seminal work on World War I fighting ships.

Well, I guess I just need to wait and see whether Mongolia gets better or worse. Buying a small island off the coast of Thailand is seeming more appealing by the day.

Thomo has calmed a little since then - although the island is still appealing. His next great tale will consist of a train journey - Michael Palin, eat your heart out.
