Around Home: Thomo at the Doctor's Posted by: ThomoTheLost on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 12:35 AM Miscellaneous
| | In all fairness, I should relate the conversation between my doctor and me at my last check-up. Before taking this last world tour, I took my somewhat fulsome figure off to the doctor for a check-up.
"May I see Dr Le please?" says Thomo (Dr Le is Thomo's Vietnamese Doctor).
"No" says the ever helpful and quite spunky doctor's receptionist, "he is on a course for 12 months learning about doctoring"
"Bugger" says Thomo. "What was he doing before?"
"He has a locum" says the ever helpful and quite spunky doctor's receptionist (I am getting old - she is 40 and looks good - argh!).

Miscellaneous: Thomo's Hole Attacked Posted by: ThomoTheLost on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 12:31 AM Miscellaneous
| | Jeffro is annoyed. A script kiddie type attacked and defaced Thomo's Hole the other day (in fact, it was done at 2004/06/12 22:51 in some time zone or other). The thing that annoyed Jeffro was that it was Thomo's Hole that was defaced ... not Jeffro's page. Er, the other thing that was kind of pleasing about this was that Thomo's Hole was defaced along with a pile of other obviously more important and significant sites, such as:
portugalforvisitors.com
rossvaloryrocks.com
evangelische-jugend.de
weblog.area32.be
and so on.

Odd Tales: The Thompson Names Posted by: ThomoTheLost on Saturday, August 02, 2003 - 06:04 AM Miscellaneous
| The Thompson Family Name
This ancient family name is found in all regions of Britain but particularly along the English/Scottish border where the usual spelling is Thomson.
Early records show an Elborard filius Thomo as living in the Cambridge area in the year 1273 and further entries show listings of a John Thomson in 1318 and a John Thompson in the Whitby area of Yorkshire in 1349; also Ralph Thommyssone in Suffolk in 1381.
Surnames were introduced to the British Isles by the Normans during the 11th Century. They were a way of further identifying people, and were usually patronymic (eg John son of Richard), local (eg John by the Brook), a trade name (eg John the Smith) or a nickname (eg John the Little).
Thompson is a patronymic name, meaning "son of Tom" or Thomas.
The ancient family motto was TEIPSUM (latin), meaning "Know thyself".

History of the Hole Posted by: Admin on Sunday, June 01, 2003 - 05:48 AM Miscellaneous
| | I think it is probably useful to mention a little history of Thomo and the Web. Thomo's first Hole on the web appeared in October, 1996, created when the family and I were living in Norway and hosted on Scandinavian Online. It was brief, consisting of about 10 pages in total, and most of those pages are still embedded away here in the current Thomo's Hole (the Sumerian Army one is one in particular and the some of the discussion of why Australia is on Top is another).
After Norway, the Hole moved back to Australia and was hosted at Bigpond (some errant pages from that site are still sitting on Bigpond's Servers). This was in January 1998. It resided there for some time until it was moved to Compuserve in March 1999 when I started travelling more again. It resided on Compuserve until 2002. I was in Korea and so we hosted it locally. The reason for move in Korea was that we had a permanent 24x7 connection there (unlike Senator Richard "It's all done for the pornography" Alston's ill-educated thoughts, the Broadband connections to the population of Korea are a government sponsored move and more Koreans have access to Broadband Internet connections that Australians have ANY connection to the Internet).
The move to coldie.net is the most recent, having occurred around September 2002. Jeffro has space on a server in the states and so the Hole is hosted from there. March 2003 is when the site was first moved from an HTML type page with lots of work for maintenance to a PHP based Content Management System PostNuke which hopefully will make it much much easier for me to manage the content.
More importantly, now that the framework is set up (well, there is some tweaking to occur with the theme of the site later) I can hang up my ftp client and do everything through a web-based interface.
The Hole throbs and thrives!
