Dr Brendan Nelson Forgets Democracy

The Australian election is over and Kevin Rudd is the new Prime Minister of Australia. There was a resounding swing to the Labour Party and to its clearly articulated policies for the future direction of Australia, socially and economically. Dr Brendan Nelson was elected as the leader of the Liberal Party, the main opposition. He is quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald as saying:

The election’s over now and Mr Rudd has a responsibility to do what is right, not just what he thinks is popular

Well hello – Australia is a democracy and it is time that politicians in Australia learnt that the government has a responsibility to do what the people have told it to do, not to do what it thinks is right.

Nice to see that the new Liberal leader has made his first faux pas the first time he speaks as the leader.
