Gar published an entry on Lost Nomad entitled Myth or Busted? You Decide…
I was going to comment directly there but when I click on the “0 comments” link no comment form opens so, I’ll comment here in Thomo’s Hole.
The gist of the article is that this guy is reeling in a 10 lb (4.5 kg) fish when a bigger fish comes along and nabs it – so he reels in the bigger fish (it weighed 44 lbs or 20 kgs). This means the total landed weight of both fish is around 25 kgs (54 lbs).
Now, if Gar had put this up yesterday then I would not have bothered checking … unless Gar is currently in the States of course.
However, checking as best I can my trusty Myth Determiner, Snopes, I note that there is a piece about this in Snopes. Unfortunately, I cannot check further as the Saudi Arabian censors have censored the Snopes site and I can’t be arsed at the moment spending the time to find a proxy server that the censors have not found yet. However, click the link here for the Snopes message board for some details.
You can also have a look at The Next Bite – a fishing magazine – where the issue illustrated here has the same fisherman and fish on its front cover.
Make up your own minds folks … but someone let me know what Snopes said (Thomo grumbles to himself about Saudi Arabian censors).

Thanks Jas.
The bloody Internet censorship here really sucks, especially as so often it catches places that are neither naughty or blasphemous.
There is a provision on the form that comes up saying a site is blocked to allow you to request the site to be unblocked, but I'd prefer to use that option when outside of the country.
Below are all the comments from the thread at snopes. As of now there doesn't appear to be a snopes ruling as to myth or busted.
FROM SNOPES:
Poor guy seems to have lost his right arm in the process … but at least he gained an extra left knee.
It's not unreasonable, having a pike strike while you are reeling in another fish is common enough. It has happened to me twice, and just about every fisher I know as well. The pike sense a struggling fish, and attacks it thinking it's injured.
The size in the photo is not unreasonable either, they do get that big. 44 punds sounds a bit excessive for a fish that size, though. A collegue of mine got a pike that was slightly above 10 kg, and it was big enough to stuff a 1.5 liter bottle into the mouth and close the mouth so that the bottle was not visible (After it was dead, but it still managed to bite him due to some remaining reflex. Pikes have nasty, nasty teeth.). I would guess that's around 15 kg or so. That said, pikes over 25 kg is not unheard of.
pikes that size are not at all unusual in that area. mrs. callee's family hails from there, and we go fishing whenever we visit. my first time there I was hauling in what I thought were HUUUUUGE pike (jack fish they call them) and I was so impressed with myself and couldn't wait to tell all the other men of the family that night over beers. fortunately mrs. callee stopped me, supressed her own laughter, and explained that catching a pike that big was about as easy as getting wet in the rain, and if I boasted about it I would sound about as ridiculous as if I announced I had successfully used the potty that day! Sure enough, when we got to her grandfathers, a large pike not that much smaller than the one pictured was stuffed and mounted in the den.

Wow, I have to go fishing there sometime! Around here, 10 kg is considered the "magical limit" of being noteworthy, much to the irritation of my coworker who has a record of 9.8 kg. You should see the insane things he use as bait to get one above 10 kg, such as bait fish in excess of 1 kg, wobblers longer than half my arm and other huge bait. That 10 kg+ pike has become his Moby Dick…
Biggest pike caught around these parts was 45lbs 15oz, though i'm pretty sure that this is an English record. 20-30Ib pike are pretty common…
As a youngster I did a lot of river and lake fishing. A recurring childhood nightmare was of a giant Pike emerging from the river and biting my hand. This thread confirms this. Why did I come here?
No luck in the archives so far.
