thomo the lost posted this in Ancient, Mongol, Wargaming on August 11th, 2010 It’s been a few months since I outlined my next wargaming project, to be added to the pile of other projects either planned or underway but not yet completed. Time for an ancient one.
This came about as a result of the three for two sale from Essex Miniatures. I’d bought Hungarians, Poles and Serbs. [...]
thomo the lost posted this in Asia Pacific, History, Japan, Korea, Naval, Wargaming on May 27th, 2010 One of the recent searches in Thomo’s Hole was the word “imjin”. There are two Imjins I can think of, both military (well three really, there is that Korean river, the Imjin river too, of course).
The first I can recall is the Battle of Imjin River in the Korean War. This was a [...]
thomo the lost posted this in Asia Pacific, History, Korea on December 8th, 2009 One of my favourite exhibits in the Korea War Memorial Museum in Seoul is the Hwacha. This is the equivalent of a Multiple Launch Rocket System but from the early Choson period of Korean History. Mythbusters set out to prove or disprove it and the result is on YouTube.
[...]
thomo the lost posted this in Asia Pacific, Australia, History, Korea, Naval, New Zealand on May 19th, 2009 As it was on this day, 19 May, in 1882 that Commodore Shufeldt landed in Korea from the USS Swatara, and as the Swatara has some connections to Australia, I thought I’d mention her here.
The ship is also quite interesting as she started life as a wooden, screw sloop in the United States [...]
thomo the lost posted this in Asia Pacific, History, Korea on February 12th, 2009 Jeffro has done it again and got the gallery back in Thomo’s Hole. That means that the Korean War Memorial Museum exhibits I’d photographed are able to be viewed again. I’ll back these up over time to a cloud service somewhere and post alternate links, however, in the interim, http://thomo.coldie.net/gallery/v/museums/korean_war_memorial/ will take you to those [...]
thomo the lost posted this in Asia Pacific, Korea on February 11th, 2008 There was the report this morning on CNN and other sources of a fire at Namdaemun (South Gate) in Seoul. This is one of my favourite historical places in Korea and a location most visitors pass at least one when they visit Seoul.
It seems as though the fire was the result of arson and [...]
thomo the lost posted this in Asia Pacific, History, Korea, Wargaming on June 26th, 2007 I ran across a website called Korea DMZ which is based around the De-Militarised Zone between North and South Korea. This means that there is a lot of information on the website concerning the Korean War, with sections covering the main combatants from the UN side (I never realised the Ethiopians and Colombians served in [...]
thomo the lost posted this in Asia Pacific, Dubai, Korea, Middle East on May 26th, 2007 I fly a lot. Recently I have been flying a lot more on Emirates than I have in the past (also on Etihad Airways as well). I was therefore amused to read in the Chosun Ilbo of Korea an article about Korean Female flight crew on Emirates Airlines. I was doubly amused reading this because [...]
thomo the lost posted this in Asia Pacific, Japan, Korea, Middle East, Saudi Arabia on May 14th, 2007 It was a few days ago that the Lost Nomad commented on discussions about linking Korea and Japan by tunnel. It just so happened that this was the day after the Arab News here ran a piece about a Causeway Linking Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Seems the causeway is a bigger and better link than [...]
thomo the lost posted this in Asia Pacific, Japan, Korea, Mongolia on May 5th, 2007 Recently there was a piece that did the rounds about Japanese buying sheep whilst thinking they were poodles. As is right, this was found to be an “urban myth” picked up by the news services (including CNN – not sure about BBC as the cable was playing up in my hotel room).
This was even [...]
