Get Older, Speak More Latin

I never learned Latin at school. Well I didn’t, except for the odd et cetera (etc.) and id est (i.e.) of course. I learned a bit of Greek (Δ and Φ and Λ and such) from Mathematics and Physics but never much in the way of Latin.

It seems though that as I’ve gotten older I am understanding or using Latin more and more. I know I used a lot of ibids (ibidem) and op cits (opus citatum) when I was at University, but now one finds the odd videlicet (even if I pronounce it wrongly and abbreviate it to viz.) and vis-à-vis creeping into reports and documents I’m writing.

It seems that as I get older, I use more Latin. Sigh, at least it cannot be seen as pretentious now can it? ;-)

What? Vis-à-vis is French? Well, it is a Romance language so I am sure it was Latin at one time.

After all, praetendere dicarum me? Nunquam!
