Last year is was the outbreak of Hong Kong Chicken SARS all over the place. Chickens (“up the stick Mulloes!”) were eliminated all over the place. In Mongolia this meant that eggs were something only available to the truly needy … like big restaurants and hotels and bakers. The rest of us mortals never saw eggs from day to day, week to week. When you wanted a nice fry-up for breakfast it was off to the local restaurant.
October 2005 and there were no eggs. In fact, when I was back in Australia then I photographed the egg section of the local supermarket just to remember what a cabinet full of eggs looked like.
Now, in Ulaanbaatar, there are so many eggs. The Chinese chicken farms must have replaced all the dead chickens three times over. I have never seen this many eggs here before.
Regarding the reference to Mulloes above, a second name there would be Jack Africa. You really need to have come from Sydney to have half a chance of understanding the reference to “the stick”, “chickens” and “Mulloes”.
