Achtung Schweinehund!: A Boy’s Own Story of Imaginary Combat

A while back Doug lent me a book, Achtung Schweinehund!: A Boy’s Own Story of Imaginary Combat written by Harry Pearson. I’d kept the book with me but hadn’t really bothered to start to read it as there was always something else to read on my eBook reader.

The battery went flat on a recent trip and this was the only paper-based book I had with me at the time. Down to dinner at the hotel restaurant and open the book (I think in this modern electronic age I can just remember how to do that).

It was a most enjoyable experience in nostalgia. Whilst some of Harry’s recollections of his early wargaming vary greatly from mine, the same feeling and spirit is present. I will admit that I almost went to the shop to look for some plastic 1/72 scale figures to keep the feeling alive.

I can recommend this book to any old (or young) wargamer. I can thoroughly recommend it to a wargame widow – reading it may provide an insight into why your partner spends so much time with the little metal men!
