Some time ago in the Hole I did a ten or twenty questions thingy about wargaming. Seems another one of these things is doing the rounds and I am nothing if not a trend follower! Here goes:
1. Favourite Wargaming period and why? | Can’t remember what I answered to this question before and looking around at the lead and books I would have to say that I am a wargames tart. However, I am interested in the wars of the 19th century at the moment, specifically the ones in the latter half and in America (North and South) as well as Europe – the Wars of Unification in particular. |
2. Next period, money no object? | Thirty Years War … or English Civil War … or Dark Ages in 28mm … or 1919 to 1938 … or or or … well, I did say I was a tart! |
3. Favourite 5 films? | In no particular order: Zulu; Blade Runner; Total Recall ((the original, haven’t seen the copy yet)); Top Hat; Lord of the Rings |
4. Favourite 5 TV series? | Again, in no particular order: X-Files; The Big Bang Theory; Frasier ((I feel like a “double decaf, non-fat latte, medium foam, dusted with just the faintest whisper of cinnamon” even as I type)); Game of Thrones; Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. I should note that this list is quite changeable. |
5. Favourite book and author? | And yes, again, no particular order: The Flashman Series by George MacDonald Fraser; The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein; The Lion of the Sun series by Harry Sidebottom; any Scandinavian crime novels – think Mankell, Nesbo, Indridason etc; and the Aubrey–Maturin series of Patrick O’Brian. Hmm, they are all series which I guess says something about me. |
6. Greatest General? | Favourite general would be Hannibal, best would, I think, be a toss up between Scipio Africanus, Chinggis Khaan and Alexander |
7. Favourite Wargames rules? | The next set I start playing regularly. |
8. Favourite Sport and team? | Cricket – test matches between Australia and England got me through University and they are great to paint to – frenetic periods of inactivity followed by brief periods of action which breaks up study and painting nicely. Favourite team would be Oz. |
9. If you had a only use once time machine, when and where would you go? | I would go to where I could get another one … OK, OK what would I really like to see? I’ve always had an interest in Admiral Thomas Cochrane and his naval battles so being able to take a cruise with him would be great. |
10. Last meal on Death Row? | Puffer Fish – no risk! |
11. Fantasy relationship and why? | Marie Antoinette … I do like a nice piece of cake. |
12. If your life were a movie, who would play you? | Leslie Phillips. |
13. Favourite Comic Superhero? | Phantom |
14. Favourite Military quote? | Nuts! |
15. Historical destination to visit? | Greece, Rome, North Africa, Kherlan Gol, Koh Chang … OK, so there are still quite a few places I haven’t seen yet and would love to visit. |
16. Biggest Wargaming regret? | Regrets, I’ve had a few, but then again, too few to mention. Thinking about it, getting rid of my 25mm Carthaginian Army a bazillion years ago. |
17. Favourite Fantasy job? | Any that would allow me to say to Alan Sugar (or Donald Trump or Mark Bouris), “You’re fired!” or even better, “you’re fried”. |
18. Favourite Song Top 5? | What’s at the top this week? If I had to pick, Inside Looking Out by Grand Funk Railroad; Panama Red by the New Riders of the Purple Sage; Runaway Train by Soul Asylum; What’s Up? by 4 Non Blondes; Black Dog by Led Zeppelin; Friday on My Mind by the Easybeats. Well, I can’t count, that’s 6. |
19. Favourite Wargaming Moment? | When 40 lowest grade possible Syrian archer figures affectionately known as “the Pixies” not only held a hill but saw off at least three regiments of crack troops sent to dislodge them. |
20. The miserable Git question, what upsets you? | Intractability in particular amongst wargames rules writers who will not move forward with style and gamers who will not move forward with rules! |
Well, that seems to be me listed. I shall now return to the painting table and tomorrow, look at updating the blog with Works in Progress (there’s more than one of them 😆 )
