Well, perhaps better described as the DBA game area. I had purchased a two foot square framed canvas to use for DBA games and painted the surface green. I wasn’t happy with this however and a few weeks ago I bought a large roll of Woodland Scenics grass mat. Yesterday I had some time in the man cave and that coupled with a walk past the local hardware store where I acquired two tubes of contact cement meant I could spend some time on the table.
I now have a DBA game area that looks a lot better than before and where the figures themselves will be more highlighted than in the past. The dark green seemed to suck the colour into the game surface. This now looks much nicer.
The raw materials – the painted canvas and a roll of Woodland Scenics grass mat
Contact cement spread across the back of the grass mat – the canvas is about to get the same treatment
After the contact dries the canvas is carefully placed on the grass mat and pressed down. In fact I stood on it, stamping down the entire area. The pots where just to keep the corners down whilst the glue cured.
The overlapping edges are now glued and stuck around the edges. The cutout in the corner is to allow the edges to fold over
The finished DBA surface. I still have a little trimming to do today but it is clearly a much better surface than it was before. I’m very happy with the colour and the finish.
The finished surface with one of my hills placed on it – just for appearance sake

Does it sag with the weight of two armies battling across its fecund surface 🙂

Not in 6mm 😛

There are a couple of folds in the surface as I did not have a 100% coverage of contact cement – should have bought 4 tubes of the stuff but hey, real plains are not entirely flat are they?
Well, except for the Golden Steppe out of Karaganda!

Nice job Ian. Looks very professional. I do like the way you wrapped the mat under the frame, very neat. Also the canvas is up to carrying the weight of 2 15mm armies. I have played a number of games at MOAB.

The grass mat will also give it some extra strength. I must give credit though as I stole the idea off Doug in Canberra
